VEGAN! THE MUSICAL: A PREVIEW

Vegan! The Musical is a work in progress, a dream of mine to tie my vegan/animal rights activism to my love of theater, especially musical theater. In this realm, my strongest influence is  HAIR which has had a profound effect on me throughout the years. The characters and scenarios in Vegan! The Musical, though fictional, are based on people and events I have known personally. It is my hope that they honestly represent the passion, the rage, the love, and the sacrifice of those I have come to see as my extended family, who are not animal rights activists because they are vegan but vegan because they are animal rights activists.

After a protracted period of procrastination, I am finally ready to share some of the script, here.

RATTLE YOUR CAGE

broken cage

[This is a song that PROPHET sings along with the rest of the abolitionist group]

Open your eyes,
It’s not food, it’s violence!
They’re feeding you lies,
Death and disease.
It’s time to get wise,
They’re counting on silence,
You won’t hear the cries
With your cravings appeased!

Come on!
Come on!

But what can you see
When you aint even free?
You’re locked up in a box
And you’ve thrown away the key!
You think you got choice?
Think you got a voice?
You built your own cage
So it seems to me!

Come on!
Come on!

Pardon me  if I rattle your cage
Pardon me if it fills you with rage
Pardon me while I help you to see
Gotta rattle your own cage
To set yourself free.

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage

Wake up!
Throw off the shackles of convention
Make it your intention
To live with true compassion
Quit rehashin’ all the lies
Quit rehashin’ all the lies
Quit rehashin’ all the lies
They feedin’ you
And did I mention
How they misleading you
To be thinkin everything is fine
When you dine
On a corpse–
That warps any perception
Of true respect for life
There’s no exception,
Like takin’ a knife
To a baby,
Well, maybe
You just don’t get it
And I bet it never occurred
To you that the word

Is murder.

Come on!
Come on!

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage.

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage

Free yourself, the time is now
Don’t ask how,
No more talk
Just smash the lock,
Emancipate your heart
That’s a start
Then you’ll  find
You can liberate your mind
Or maybe it’s the other way around
Anyway, you’re bound
To see things in a different light
That’s right

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage.

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage

Rattle your cage, rattle your cage,
Grab hold of those bars
And rattle your cage

MAXIMUM ROSE

Max Rose is a sixteen year old, gender-fluid Asian American animal rights activist who, as this song tells us is very anxious to turn eighteen!

max-rose

I have great anticipation
Over my emancipation,
There’s such a burning yearning
To be free!
I long for the elation
Of my eighteenth celebration
And the right to stake my claim
On liberty!

I have the highest aspiration
For total Liberation
There’s rebellion churning
Deep inside of me,
With utmost concentration
I’ll make my preparation
For the day that I can name
As the day that I’ll be free.

Come on eighteen hurry up,
I can’t wait forever!
I can’t wait to say goodbye
To this land of never never.
I want to be expansive and free,
Much more than you suppose,
I don’t want to be just a minimum me,
I want to be Maximum Rose!

Maximum, Maximum, Maximum Rose,
From my maximum head to my maximum toes —
Maximum choice,
Maximum voice,
Girl and boy,
Maximum joy
Maximum, Maximum Rose!

I may be shy and quiet
But I can start a riot,
Just watch those rules you impose
Don’t tell me I can’t do it,
For me, there’s nothing to it
Just watch me now, I’m Maximum Rose!

Maximum, Maximum, Maximum Rose,
Maximum is as maximum goes,
Maximum fighter for maximum love,
Like a maximum hand in a maximum glove
It’s always one struggle,
It’s always one fight
For maximum freedom
And animal rights
Maximum choice
Maximum voice,
Girl and boy,
Maximum joy,
For puppy or pig,
Little or big,
From my maximum heart
Is where it will start
To my maximum toes,
I’m Maximum, Maximum, Maximum Rose!

MISANTHROPE’S LOVE SONG

This is a song sung by a character named Natalie, twenty-something misanthrope,  who is in love with Peter, also twenty-something,  rabidly misanthropic and militant in his rhetoric on the one hand and a sweet, needy guy just under the surface. I have not yet formed a scene around this but Peter has just finished a tirade against human beings, calling them “viruses in shoes” and declaring that all humans are scum.

NATALIE.

I’ve searched low and high
For that one special guy
Who shared my disdain for our species,
Yet who cared for the birds
And the bees and the herds
Of all of the four-legged beasties.
But I just couldn’t see
Where that fella could be
And I started to feel like a dope,
I just couldn’t cope
And I nearly lost hope
Of finding my own misanthrope —

Then suddenly he is here,
Hating humans with a passion,
And I swoon!
He makes it quite clear
The human race needs to crash
And do it soon!

And though I think it’s great
How much he loves to hate
All of humanity,
He’d fulfill the hope
Of this misanthrope –
If only he’d love me!

I’m a girl who loves a guy
Who thinks I’m scum,
And I could die
From happiness!

Though he’s no guy to harm a fly
He’d beat a drum
For homicide,
And nothing less!

People who love people
Who hate people
Are the only ones
Who truly care!
People who hate people
Who love people
Are the only ones
Who truly dare
To change this fucked up world!

I’m a girl, he’s a guy,
We’re both scum
And we should die
In sweet caress

My kinda guy – to him I’d fly
We’d beat that drum
For homicide,
And nothing less!

And though I think it’s great
How much he loves to hate
All of humanity
He’d fulfill the hope
Of this misanthrope –
If only he’d love me!
